If you are not musically or artistically inclined, and still want to experience a hands-on experience of the era - crafts may be your bag. Hippies were rather creative and made beautiful candles, fragrant incense, wind chimes, furniture, jewelry, and much more. Simplicity was a part of the hippie lifestyle - an appreciation of simple pleasures.
Many groovy pieces for trip rooms and living rooms were hand made items, or other people's trash that was creatively altered into something again useful. A common table in the Sixties was a large wooden spool used for commercial wire. Wind chimes could be made with string, wooden dowels, and old pieces of silverware.
Craft books are available at any public library, or through new and used booksellers. One such book in my collection that is specifically for Hippies is: "Hippie Crafts - Creating A Hip New Look Using Groovy '60s Crafts" by Joanne O'Sullivan.

Howdy In the late 60s, hippies made usable objects out of discarded "trash". One of the most popular were cable spool tables. These large wooden spools were about 3 feet high, and could be covered with material, ala a table cloth. Attachments:
